Embracing the Heat: The Benefits of Hot Yoga During Winter Weather

Written by Savannah (Copy Compass)

Brr, it’s cold out there! 🥶 We see it in your rosy cheeks and sniffly noses every time you escape Wisconsin’s winter weather and enter the studio. Twisted Grit is proud to welcome you in as temperatures drop, especially because we know how tempting it is to wrap yourself in blankets and get cozy at home.

But, it’s hard to resist the comfort of the hot yoga studio’s ceramic infrared heaters, and for good reason. We turned to science to figure out why hot yoga is irresistible, especially during winter weather.

Deep Heat Penetration

During cold weather, our muscles are prone to stiffening and contraction, which can make everyday movement uncomfortable or difficult. Hot yoga provides a soothing antitode to this stiffness by promoting depe heat penetration that extends beneath the surface of the skin, reaching the muscles and joints.

Our hot studio’s ceramic infrared heating panels make it easier for your body’s capillaries to expand, stimulating blood flow and helping you find comfort on the mat quickly and continuously during class.

Detoxification

Sweating is one of the body’s most effective natural detoxifiers. For most people, hot yoga is an easy way to increase sweat output. The intense heat often leads to intense sweating (no, we can’t smell you), which helps flush out toxins and impurities from the body. This detox process can leave you feeling rejuvenated and energized as you shed the stress and tension of daily life. Many students report both physical and mental clarity after their hot yoga classes.

Boosted Circulation

Cold weather can constrict blood vessels and decrease circulation – especially for those who sit inside at a desk or have limited movement during of the day. Decrease circulation often leads to sluggishness and decreased vitality.

Hot yoga, on the other hand, can stimulate your circulation and deliver oxygen-rich blood throughout the body. This improved circulation can enhance your overall health while keeping winter dullness at bay.

Enhanced Mental Clarity

The dark days of winter can sometimes cloud our minds and dampen our spirits. If you’ve never felt the impact of S.A.D (seasonal affective disorder), consider yourself lucky. Our yoga classes offer a sanctuary of warmth and positivity, creating a safe environment for you to escape the winter blues.

Through a combination of heat, movement, and intentional breathing, we can cultivate mental clarity while reducing stress and boosting moods. Plus, immersing yourself in the TGY community is good for the soul. Many students report feeling balanced and centered after class.

Immune System Support

Cold weather usually coincides with an increase in colds and the flu. Luckily, consistent hot yoga practice can actually give your immune system a boost! The heat stimulates the production of white blood cells, which strengthen your body’s defenses against illness. Plus, the deep breathing techniques that we often call upon during class can help clear respiratory passages and improve lung function.

Community and Connection at TGY

Don’t let the cold keep you from moving thriving! It’s easy to feel isolated as we retreat indoors during the winter months, but in addition to the numerous health benefits of hot yoga, it’s also good for the soul to spend time in the company of others.

We pride ourselves on our welcoming environment that facilitates connection and fosters a sense of community. Our goal is to combat feelings of loneliness and isolation, and contribute to a happier, healthier community.
